The student union at the University of Prince Edward Island is supporting a decision by the university president to remove the student newspaper from campus this week after it published 12 cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad.

At first, the student union supported the newspaper. But Ryan Gallant, president of the student union, says he changed his mind after meeting with MacLauchlan four times and after talking with many students.

Gallant says there are many reasons why the newspaper won’t be distributed.

“In weighing the options of running the cartoons, something that should have been taken into consideration was the danger it posed for other people in the world,” Gallant says.

“There are consequences that we on P.E.I. don’t usually have to deal with, and if it gets out of hand in the national and international media, it’s something that could have very real effects elsewhere in the world. That was our major concern.”
